Chapter Overview
Millions of Americans spend much of each workday in offices. Many changes in technology have occurred during the last decade. These changes have created a widespread need for knowledge and skills that are commonly referred to office competencies. Whatever their fields of specialization or careers, workers share a need to know how to perform efficiently and effectively in offices.
The office is changing. Many workers now perform office tasks. The recruiter in a human resources department, the technician in a chemical laboratory, the curator in a museum, the buyer in a department store, and the CPA in a public accounting firm all perform a range of office tasks during a typical work week. Each of these workers may have totally different jobs and responsibilities, however
regardless of their responsibilities, each must understand the significance of office functions in relation their work and to the total organization.
